A place where mountains touch the soul

Welcome to Italy's northernmost valley! The Valli di Tures e Aurina, a hidden gem in South Tyrol, offer a unique blend of unspoiled nature, outdoor adventure, and pure relaxation — in both summer and winter. Set on the sun-kissed side of the Zillertal Alps, the valley is a true haven for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts alike. Its breathtaking alpine landscape, crowned by more than 80 majestic peaks rising above 3,000 meters, captivates visitors year after year.

Valle Aurina enchants not only with its natural scenery, but also with its rich cultural heritage. At the entrance to the valley lies Kematen, an inviting starting point for exploration. Stroll along the peaceful Franziskusweg contemplation path, pass the impressive Reinbach waterfalls, and allow the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings to inspire you.

Just a short distance to the north lies the lively town of Sand in Taufers, home to the striking medieval Taufers Castle. Perched above the valley, it ranks among South Tyrol's most impressive fortresses and welcomes around 70,000 visitors each year. Former drawbridges, a romantic castle garden, and more than 20 furnished rooms open to the public bring its history vividly to life. Sand in Taufers combines carefully preserved traditions with a vibrant cultural scene — from the popular Music Summer concert series to the lively street food events held in July and August.

Another remarkable attraction is the climate tunnel in Prettau, the only one of its kind in Italy, valued for its therapeutic benefits. Set within the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, Valle Aurina is surrounded by dramatic mountain slopes, deep forests, remote summits, and rushing waters. Alpine lakes, clear streams, the untamed Ahr river, and thundering waterfalls all reflect the raw strength and beauty of the mountains.

St. Johann, the largest village in Valle Aurina and a recognized mountain health resort, serves as an ideal base for a wide range of alpine excursions. Further into the valley, St. Jakob rests on a sunny hillside and is a haven for travelers seeking tranquility and unspoiled nature. It is also known for its annual open-air festival, blending rock music with a medieval-style atmosphere. At the very end of the valley lies Kasern, a picturesque mountain village framed by towering peaks, where traditional crafts are still practiced and offer an authentic glimpse into local life.

Tip: The Kornkasten Mining Museum in Steinhaus, once used to store provisions for miners' wages, was transformed into a museum in 2000. Today it houses the Enzenberg Collection, featuring wooden models, paintings, mining maps, historical documents, and artifacts from the Prettau copper mines.
